Mahesh V. Panchagnula graduated from IIT Madras in 1992 with a B. Tech in Mechanical
Engineering. He subsequently obtained an MSME in 1994 and Ph.D. in ME in 1997, both from Purdue University. He has since worked in industrial research positions with Goodrich Aerospace and Excel India till 2004. He has served as a Research Fellow at Lehigh University and as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Tennessee Technological University from 2005 to 2010. He has been on the faculty of the Department of Applied Mechanics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras since 2010 and in the current rank since 2014.
He is also the co-founder of the IIT Madras pre-incubator Nirmaan and the associate faculty-in-charge of the IIT Madras Incubation Cell, which advises faculty and students entrepreneurship activities.
Dr. Panchagnula’s current research broadly focuses on fundamental interdisciplinary multiphase
thermal/ fluid phenomena including wetting, hysteresis in natural systems, spray formation physics, pulmonary aerosol transport, liquid-liquid wetting and spray combustion. His lab employs both experimental as well as theoretical inquiry techniques. He has worked on the problem of contactangle hysteresis and shown that it is an effect originating at the contact line. In addition, he has worked on wetting in partially miscible liquid-liquid systems such as oil/water thin film dynamics
with Marangoni effects. His recent research has focused on applying simulation and data analytics tools to fluid mechanics problems such as the behaviour of large crowds and turbulence. His complete list of published work can be found on Google Scholar.
Dr. Ashwin Mahalingam joined the faculty at IIT-Madras in 2006. Prior to IIT-Madras he helped start-up a company in Silicon Valley and ran a Social-Entrepreneurship Business plan competition at Stanford University.
At IIT-Madras he is the faculty advisor of the Entrepreneurship Cell, sits on the board of the IIT-Madras Incubation Cell and co-founded IITM's pre-incubation program - Nirmaan. He is also a co-Founder and Director of Okapi Advisory Services Pvt Ltd.
Prof. Satyanarayanan is the faculty advisor for Nirmaan. He is currently a faculty member in the department of Applied Mechanics. His lab, Energy and Emissions focuses advancing science and technology in the domains of energy storage, waste heat recovery and emission control.
He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering, with specialization in Aerosol Science from Texas A&M University, College Station in 2007 and his postdoctoral research experience at Rutgers University, New Jersey in the field of bioaerosol quantification and electrostatic methods for emission control. Prior to his current role at IITM, he worked on various capacities at GE’s Global Research Center in Bangalore and headed the Chennai R&D center for steam engineering and instrumentation company Forbes Marshall.
On the policy side, Dr. Satya coordinates the energy group at the Centre for Technology and Policy (CTaP) at IIT Madras where they work on technology, policy and economic aspects of industrial energy use. He is also a member of the energy sub-committee at South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), trying to identify and remove bottlenecks in clean energy technology transition to industry.
